Waitlist FAQs
Waitlist FAQs
Thank you for applying to the University of Maryland! We hope the information below will answer questions you may have about your placement on the fall semester waitlist.
First, congratulations on your spring semester admission to UMD! Your admission for the spring semester means that you have the opportunity to participate in the Freshmen Connection program during the fall semester. This would allow you to take classes at UMD in the fall. We encourage you to consider participating in Freshmen Connection and to learn more about it on our website. If you decide to participate, please confirm your enrollment as soon as possible. If you are admitted to the fall semester from the waitlist, your enrollment deposit for the spring will be transferred to the fall.
Due to space limitations in the fall class, each year we offer many students the opportunity to begin their studies in the spring semester. In addition, a small number of those students are offered a place on the waitlist for the fall semester. If additional spaces become available in the fall class, we may offer fall admission to select students from the waitlist. If you are admitted from the waitlist for the fall semester and you have already confirmed participation in Freshmen Connection, your enrollment will automatically be switched to regular fall enrollment.
We understand you are disappointed that we could not offer you admission to UMD at this time. The undergraduate admission process is rigorous and individualized, and admission to UMD has become increasingly competitive. Due to space limitations in the fall class, each year we have to make fine distinctions between many qualified applicants. However, a small number of students who are not offered admission are offered a place on the waitlist for the fall semester. If additional spaces become available in the fall class, we may offer fall admission to select students from the waitlist.
Each year, we place around 250 students on the waitlist.
No, there is no need to take any action to indicate your interest.
No, students on the waitlist are not ranked.
If we determine that we have additional space available in the fall semester, the Admission Committee conducts a holistic, full-file review of students placed on the waitlist. This review is the same review that is used to determine which students will be offered admission and utilizes the same application review factors.
Typically, we admit very few students, if any, from the waitlist. As a result, we advise students to assume that fall admission from the waitlist is unlikely.
All students placed on the waitlist are notified of their final status by the end of June.
