Fee Waivers
The University of Maryland (UMD) will waive the application fee ($80) for students who meet any of the following eligibility criteria at the time of their application.
Eligibility Criteria
ApplyWeb and Common App criteria
- Students who meet any of these criteria should indicate this on the application (see the “Fee Waiver” section of your application profile). The fee will be waived automatically for those eligible.
- Students do not need to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions unless they are still being asked for payment after indicating their eligibility on the application. If you are being asked for payment, stop and email ApplyMaryland@umd.edu. Read the "How to Request a Fee Waiver" section below.
Active duty military, veterans and their dependents
- Active duty military and veterans fee waivers are applied automatically once you have designated your status. If you are being asked for payment, stop and email ApplyMaryland@umd.edu.
- Dependents (freshman applicants only) are processed by request. Read the "How to Request a Fee Waiver" section below.

Freshman applicants who have received any of the following awards:
- National Achievement Finalists and Semifinalists
- National Merit Finalists and Semifinalists
- College Board National Recognition Program
- School Recognition Award
- First-Generation Recognition Award
- Rural and Small Town Recognition Award
Processed by request. Indicating that you have won an award(s) on your application will not waive the fee. Read the "How to Request a Fee Waiver" section below.
How to Request a Fee Waiver
Requests must be made by the applicant and should be received no later than 4:30 p.m. EST on the day of the deadline. We cannot guarantee that requests received later will be processed in time for submission.
Step 1: Make sure the University of Maryland, College Park is in your “My Colleges” list.
- Step 2: Email ApplyMaryland@umd.edu with the subject line “Freshman Fee Waiver Request” and the following information in the body of the email:
- Application type: (Common App or ApplyWeb)
- **First Name:
- **Last Name:
- Date of birth:
- If applicable, also include the following:
- Proof of your award (PDF attachments and screenshots are acceptable)
- Brief description of your extenuating circumstances
- Do not submit any documents containing sensitive information (e.g., Social Security Number, tax documents, medical records, etc.).
Step 3: Wait for confirmation before submitting your application
Common App: wait to receive confirmation that your waiver was successfully applied
ApplyWeb: wait to receive your Unique Personal Code (UPC)
Step 4 (ApplyWeb only): Copy your code into the “Unique Personal Code” field when prompted.
- Step 5: Submit your application!
If you are still being asked for payment, please email us before submitting your application.
Requests must be made by the applicant at least three business days before an application deadline to ensure adequate time to handle the request. We cannot guarantee that requests received later will be processed in time.

- First name:
- Last name:
- Brief description of your extenuating circumstances
- Do not submit any documents containing sensitive information (e.g. Social Security Number, tax documents, medical records, etc.).
Step 2: Wait to receive a one-time use code via email. This is your “Unique Personal Code”.
Step 3: Copy your code into the “Unique Personal Code” field when prompted.
- Step 4: Submit your application!
