We are committed to providing pathways to accessible and affordable education.

The University of Maryland (UMD) offers many financial aid programs including scholarships and grants to turn your dream into a degree.

Scholarships and grants provide funding that you don't need to pay back and are awarded based on financial need and/or academic achievements. Freshman applicants that submit a completed application by the November 1 early action deadline for priority consideration are automatically reviewed for our Freshmen Merit Scholarships. Transfer applicants that submit a completed application by the March 1 early action deadline for priority consideration are automatically reviewed for some of our Transfer Merit Scholarships.

Maryland residents will be considered for the following need-based grants based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Expected Family Contribution:

The Federal Work Study (FWS) program at UMD is designed to assist students in meeting their educational and living expenses through part-time employment. FWS, a federally funded program, offers opportunities at both on and off campus locations and is available for students who exhibit financial need based on the FAFSA Expected Family Contribution.

There are several ways to finance your education at UMD using loans. These funds are borrowed and must be repaid after graduation.

The FAFSA is the only application needed to be considered for federal loans including the:

  • Federal Direct Subsidized Loan for eligible students based on the FAFSA Expected Family Contribution
  • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan for eligible students
