Orientation

An important step in your transition to the University of Maryland (UMD) is to attend New Student Orientation, where you will learn about UMD traditions, connect with university faculty and staff and get acquainted with our campus resources.

Orientation is required for all newly admitted UMD students including freshman, transfer and international students, regardless of resident classification.

Freshman students admitted to the fall semester, Freshmen Connection participants and early action transfer students admitted to the fall semester are strongly encouraged to register for orientation by June 1.

  1. Confirm your enrollment at UMD.
    • It may take up to 48 business hours for your enrollment confirmation to be processed and posted to your student record. This process must be completed prior to registering for orientation.

  2. Activate your Directory ID and set up Multi-Factor Authentication.

  3. Use your Directory ID to register for New Student Orientation.
    • Spring admitted freshman students planning to participate in Freshmen Connection must confirm their participation in the program prior to selecting an orientation date.

  4. Log in to Canvas and accept the terms and conditions.
    • Use your Directory ID and password to log in and then select “I agree” to the Canvas terms and conditions that are displayed upon login. You can then log out. If you do not complete this step, you will be unable to register for classes and participate in orientation.

  5. Review the appropriate new student to-do list from the Office of Student Orientation and Transition.

For questions regarding orientation schedules and registration information, please contact the Office of Student Orientation and Transition.

Incoming students who wish to change their intended major should email their request to our office at ApplyMaryland@umd.edu using the subject line "Change of Major Request".

Once the major change is processed, you must contact the Office of Student Orientation and Transition to determine whether your orientation date will be affected. Not all colleges advise students on each orientation date and failing to check may result in you having to reschedule your orientation session on the day you arrive for your program. (Orientation dates for Freshmen Connection students are not affected by major.)

Major change requests will take several days to be processed and you should refrain from contacting the Office of Student Orientation and Transition until after you receive a confirmation that your major has been updated.

All first-year students, regardless of SAT or AP/IB scores, must take the Math Placement Test before orientation. There are no exemptions from taking the Math Placement Test for first-year students.

Spring admitted freshman students participating in Freshmen Connection will not have their participation in the program finalized until the results from their Math Placement Test have been received.

All transfer students are encouraged to take the Math Placement Test before orientation. However, transfer students are required to take the Math Placement Test if they do not have equivalent credit for MATH140 and have received a 2.0 in that class or are entering the School of Public Health or College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, regardless of prior coursework and credits. Transfer students in the A. James Clark School of Engineering and Robert H. Smith School of Business do not need to take the Math Placement Test.

ESTIMATED COST OF ATTENDANCE:

State of Maryland Residents   Non-Maryland Residents

The University of Maryland has launched a new investment in need-based financial aid, the Terrapin Commitment program, which will provide up to $20 million annually for students from the state of Maryland.

The goal of the Terrapin Commitment program is to reduce the gap between a student’s total financial aid package and the cost of an education. The program will begin in January 2023 and ensures that tuition and fees are fully covered for Pell eligible, in-state students, who are enrolled full time and have unmet financial need. More details can be found on the Office of Student Financial Aid's website.
